What E4 Means
WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: the E-series belongs to the Asko Logic and heat-pump tumble dryers - the T408HD, T410HD, T608HX and their siblings. On these the display shows "Error" and a number together with a short line of text, and holding the INFO button brings up the description. The older TD60-generation condenser dryers do not use E-codes at all; the TD60.1 panel shows F1 and F2, which are separate entries here, and the TD60.2, TD60.3, TD70 and TDC44 machines show plain-language messages instead of codes.
WHAT E4 MEANS: the line on the display is "E4 - Please clean filters or call service." Asko's published action is "Clean the filters. See chapter 'CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE' or call service centre." Unlike most of the dryer E-codes, the instruction here is a task rather than a phone call, and it is put first.
WHAT THE MACHINE HAS WORKED OUT: a tumble dryer works by moving air. Lint coats the door filter and, over months, the condenser matrix behind it, and as airflow falls the machine takes longer and runs hotter to achieve less. E4 is the control noticing that the air is not moving the way it should.
WHY IT IS WORTH TREATING SERIOUSLY EVEN THOUGH IT IS ONLY CLEANING: a restricted dryer is a hot dryer. Keeping the filters and the condenser clean is the single most effective thing an owner does for a machine of this type, and it is the reason these dryers also carry plain-language prompts - "Clean door filter", "Clean the condenser unit", "Please empty the water tank and clean door filter" - that appear before anything gets as far as a code.
CLASSIFICATION: maintenance. This is the machine asking for the routine care its own manual describes.
Common Causes of E4
- Door lint filter blocked, or coated with fabric softener film
- Condenser unit clogged with lint
- Filter or condenser refitted without seating correctly
- Air path restricted by lint in the housing
- Airflow sensing faulty, if the filters are genuinely clean
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the dryer cool before you start - the drum, the filter housing and the condenser are all warm at the end of a cycle. Open the door and lift out the lint filter, peel the lint off it in one sheet with your fingers, then rinse it under a tap and dry it before refitting; a filter that looks clean but has a film of fabric softener across the mesh still blocks the air, and the film only comes off with water. Check the filter housing below it for lint that has got past. Then, on the models where Asko documents the condenser unit as an owner task, release it, rinse it through and refit it squarely - the manual's cleaning and maintenance chapter for your model shows how, and on machines where the condenser is not owner-accessible that step is for a technician instead. Empty the water tank. Refit everything properly and run a cycle. If E4 comes back with genuinely clean filters, Asko's instruction is to call.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The drum, the filter housing and the condenser are warm at the end of a cycle, so the machine is left to cool before anything is removed.
- On the models where the condenser is not documented as an owner-accessible part, cleaning it is a technician task rather than a step to improvise.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
