WHY A WASHING MACHINE NEEDS CLEANING AT ALL: a machine used mostly on low-temperature programmes never gets hot enough for long enough to clear the film of detergent residue, fabric softener and body oils that builds up in the drum, the outer tub and the door seal. That film is what produces the smell people describe as stale, and it is also where mould grows on the seal. A hot drum cleaning cycle is the designed answer.

Select the drum cleaning programme, add whatever your manual specifies for it, and let it run to the end; it is a long hot cycle by design. When it has finished, wipe the door seal out, pulling the rubber lip back gently to reach the fold underneath where water sits, and leave the door ajar afterwards so the drum dries. While you are there, pull the detergent drawer out and rinse it, since the same residue collects in it. If the smell persists after a drum cleaning cycle, the pump filter is the next place to look, and that is cleaned with the machine switched off at the outlet or the breaker and a tray underneath, because it holds water.
