What E22 Means
WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: the E-series belongs to the Asko Logic, Pro Home, Craft and Elements washers - models such as W2084, W4086, W6088X and the WM75 series. On these the display shows "Error" and the number; holding the INFO button brings up the description text, and EXIT returns to the main menu. The earlier W6xxx machines do not use E-codes at all; they show F10, F11 and F12, which are separate entries here. E22 is listed in the WM75.1 manual among others.
WHAT E22 MEANS: the description text is "DOOR LOCK ERROR", expanded as "Error while locking the door." Asko's published action is to close the door again, switch the appliance off and restart it, and to contact a service technician if the error recurs.
WHAT SEPARATES IT FROM THE OTHER DOOR CODES ON THE SAME MACHINE: E22 is specifically the locking attempt failing. E23 is the opposite - the door is shut and cannot be unlocked. E2 is the more general door lock error, and the plain-text "UNABLE TO LOCK DOOR" alert appears in the same table. They are one manufacturer's set on one platform, and the exact wording the INFO button shows is worth noting before you call, because it is not interchangeable.
WHY THE CYCLE WILL NOT START: the control will not turn the drum until the lock has reported that it has engaged. That is the interlock doing its job.
CLASSIFICATION: fault, on a safety interlock, with a genuine owner check in front of it.
Common Causes of E22
- Laundry or the door seal fouling the latch
- Door not pushed fully to its final position
- Detergent residue on the latch or in the striker recess
- Door lock assembly worn or failed
- Door hinge worn so the door sits slightly proud
- Wiring or control fault in the lock circuit
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Open the door fully and look along the whole seal before closing it again. A sock, a strap, the corner of a duvet cover or a fold of the rubber itself sitting in the path of the latch is the most common reason a lock cannot complete its travel, and it is invisible unless you look for it. Clear the rim, close the door firmly to its final position with one deliberate push, then switch the appliance off and on and start the programme - that is the published sequence. Check the latch tongue on the door and the recess it enters for detergent residue and wipe both with a damp cloth if they are gummy. Do not wedge, tape or hold the door, and do not try to trick the interlock into reporting locked; it is what keeps the drum still while the door is open. If the error returns with a clean, clear, properly closed door, it is a service call.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The interlock prevents the drum turning with the door open, so it is never bypassed, wedged or held shut.
- The lock assembly and its wiring sit behind the front panel alongside the mains loom, and the machine has to be isolated at the outlet or the breaker before that is opened.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
