What WATER INLET FAULT Means

WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: Asko washers with a text window rather than a numeric display report their problems in words, and several generations do it. The Use and Care Guides for the US W6761, W640 and W660 carry one such table; the operating instructions for the W8844XL and the W6884 Eco carry another; and the WM60 service manual carries the problem-indication tables for the WM60.2 and WM60.3 panels. The wording varies slightly between them and the section below says which document each form comes from. All of these machines introduce the table the same way: a message appears on the display if an error occurs during the program, and it is cleared by turning the machine off and then back on.

WHAT THE MESSAGE MEANS: the machine opened its inlet valve, waited for the water level to reach what the program asked for, and did not get there in the time it allows. The WM60 service manual puts a figure on it: "If the correct water level is not reached within 5 minutes, the wash cycle is interrupted." So the machine is not reporting that no water came; it is reporting that not enough came soon enough, which includes a supply that is merely slow.

WHAT ASKO PRINTS FOR THE OWNER, AND IT IS UNUSUALLY COMPLETE. The short form in the W6761, W640 and W660 guide is "Make sure the water tap is open." The W600-series service manual expands it: "Indicates a problem in the water supply. 1. Make sure the water supply to the machine has been turned on (cold fill only). 2. Check that the filter in the machine water inlet is not blocked." The W8844XL instructions give the whole procedure: "Check: that the tap on the water pipe is open; that the filter in the machine's water intake is not blocked. Action: 1 Turn off the water supply valve and unscrew the hose. 2 Clean the filter in the intake valve on the machine. 3 Screw the hose back on and turn on the valve. 4 Run the program again to check whether the error has been fixed. 5 If this does not resolve the problem, call the Customer Care Center."

NOTE THE ORDER OF THAT PROCEDURE: the supply valve is turned off before the hose is unscrewed. That is not a formality. A hose under mains pressure that is loosened at the wrong end is a quantity of water arriving somewhere it cannot be caught.

A SPECIFICATION WORTH KNOWING: the US instructions for these machines give a water pressure range of 14 to 145 psi. A supply below that band fills too slowly for the control to accept, which matters where the pressure is naturally low or where a stop tap upstream has been left part closed.

COLD FILL ONLY: Asko notes it in the service manual wording. These machines take one supply, and a hot connection is not part of the design, which occasionally explains a machine that has never filled properly since it was installed.

CLASSIFICATION: problem, and one of the few that is usually solved entirely outside the machine.

Common Causes of WATER INLET FAULT

  • Supply tap or valve to the washer closed or only partly open
  • Filter screen in the inlet hose coupling blocked with grit or scale
  • Inlet hose kinked or crushed behind the machine
  • Supply pressure below the 14 to 145 psi band Asko specifies
  • Inlet valve failed or its coil open circuit
  • Level sensor or its pressure hose not reporting the rising level

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Work through Asko's published sequence and do not skip the first step. Check the washer's own supply tap is fully open rather than part turned, and check that nothing else has shut the water off - a service valve under the sink moved during other work, a stop tap left closed after a plumbing job. If other cold taps in the house are weak, the problem is the supply and not the appliance. Look along the inlet hose behind and beside the machine for a kink or a crush point where the cabinet has been pushed back against it. Then, and only then, the filter screen: turn off the water supply valve first and let the pressure off, put a towel and a bowl under the coupling because the hose stays full of water either way, and unscrew the hose at the machine end by hand. The screen is a small mesh disc in the coupling; rinse it under a running tap until it is clear, refit it exactly the way it came out, screw the hose back on hand-tight and then a little more rather than with a wrench, and open the valve. Watch the joint for weeping for a few seconds before you walk away. Run the program again to see whether the message has gone. If the tap is open, the hose is clear and the screen is clean and the message returns, the inlet valve or the level sensing is next, and that is inside the cabinet.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The supply valve is turned off and the pressure let off before the hose is unscrewed, which is the order Asko itself prints, and a towel and bowl go underneath because the hose holds water regardless.
  • A hose coupling is hand-tightened rather than wrenched, because over-tightening splits the plastic thread and turns a filter clean into a leak.
  • The inlet valve and the level sensor sit inside the cabinet alongside the heating circuit wiring, so nothing past the coupling is opened on a connected machine.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

WATER INLET FAULT FAQ

Yes, and it is the commonest version of it. The control gives the fill a time limit, five minutes on the WM60 platform, and a supply arriving through a blinded filter screen puts water in the drum without meeting that limit.

No. Asko documents these machines as cold fill only, and the control heats the water it is given. A hot supply is not part of how the machine is designed to work.
