What THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN Means
WHICH MACHINE THIS APPLIES TO: the Asko WCAM1812, the combination washer and dryer that washes and dries in one drum. It is a rotary machine - a programmer knob, a row of cycle indicator lights and an on-off indicator - and that description is the key to everything on these pages, because a machine built that way has nowhere to print a fault code.
THE SHORT VERSION OF WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND: the WCAM1812 has no error codes at all. That is a documented finding from two independent Asko documents, not a gap. The use and care guide's troubleshooting chapter is entirely symptom-based, and the service manual for this platform diagnoses through a manual autotest instead of through a fault table.
HOW THE MACHINE TELLS YOU ANYTHING: through the cycle indicator lights. The guide states that as the programme progresses the light for the cycle in progress will glow, and the stop indicator glows when the programme has ended or been stopped. That is the whole of the machine's reporting vocabulary, and reading it properly is what takes the place of a code.
WHAT ASKO DOCUMENTS: under the heading for a door that will not open, the use and care guide states that for safety reasons the door remains locked for two to three minutes after the programme has finished.
WHY THAT ONE SENTENCE IS WORTH A PAGE: because it is the single most common reason somebody decides this machine is broken. The lights say the programme is over, the drum is still, the machine is silent, and the door will not move. On an appliance with no display to explain itself, that reads as a fault. It is not. It is a timed delay, and waiting is the entire remedy.
WHY A COMBINATION MACHINE IN PARTICULAR KEEPS ITS DOOR SHUT: this machine dries in the same drum it washes in. At the end of a drying programme the drum and its contents are hot, and at the end of a wash there may still be water. A short delay before the door releases is a sensible arrangement on a machine that can be holding either.
WHAT TO DO IF IT IS STILL LOCKED WELL BEYOND THAT: think about which of two situations you are in. If there is water in the drum, the machine is holding the door because of the water, and the drainage checks are the page to read rather than this one. If the drum is empty and the door is still locked long after the programme ended, that is a real fault and it belongs to somebody who can open the machine.
WHAT NOT TO CONCLUDE: that a code exists for it. There is no code for a locked door on this machine, and the claim that Asko combination machines show an E10 door unlock fault is wrong on every count - the machine has no codes at all.
CLASSIFICATION: normal behaviour in almost every case. Two or three minutes of patience, documented by the manufacturer.
Common Causes of THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN
- The documented two to three minute delay after the programme has finished
- Water still in the drum, which keeps the door locked until the machine can empty it
- A drying programme just finished, so the drum and its contents are still hot
- Programmer knob left between positions so the machine has not properly ended the cycle
- Door catch or lock device faulty, which is what remains once the wait and the water are ruled out
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Wait the two to three minutes the guide describes, from the moment the programme actually finished rather than from when you first pulled at the door. While you wait, look at the drum through the glass: if there is water in it, the lock is doing its job and the question is drainage rather than the door, so read the machine's drainage checks instead. If the drum is dry and the load has been through a drying programme, give it a little longer - a machine that has just finished drying is hot inside, and the delay is there for that reason. Check the machine is actually switched off at the end of the programme and that the programmer knob is where it should be rather than part way between positions. Do not pull hard at the door, lever it with anything, or try to work an implement into the gap to release the catch, because a catch that is bent or a seal that is torn turns a two-minute wait into a repair. If the door is still locked with an empty drum several minutes after the machine has finished and been switched off, switch it off at the outlet or the breaker, leave it a minute and try once more - and if it stays locked after that, report it rather than forcing it.

- A locked door is never levered, forced or picked at with an implement, because a bent catch or a torn seal turns a short wait into a repair.
- If the door stays locked with an empty drum well after the machine has finished, the catch and lock device sit behind the front of a machine that is isolated at the outlet or the breaker before it is opened.
