What PLEASE CLOSE THE DOOR Means

WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: the TD75 machines, sold as the T408HD and the T608HX. Asko prints this message in the section headed "INFORMATION before, during, and after the program (depending on the model)", alongside the other prompts the machine shows rather than in a fault table.

WHAT ASKO PRINTS AS THE ACTION: "Close the dryer door before starting or resuming the program." That is the entire published entry, and it is as literal as it looks.

WHAT THE MACHINE IS ACTUALLY REPORTING: a dryer will not run with the door open, and it does not decide that by looking. A switch in the door frame tells the control whether the door is latched, and the control refuses to start until that switch says it is. The message appears when start was pressed and the switch had not reported a closed door.

WHY IT SOMETIMES APPEARS WITH A DOOR THAT LOOKS SHUT: a door can be resting against its frame without the catch having engaged, particularly if a sleeve or a corner of a sheet is trapped in the opening, if the seal is standing proud, or if the machine sits fractionally out of level so the door swings back. A gentle push is not always enough; the catch has to click.

WHEN IT STOPS BEING A PROMPT: if the door is firmly latched and the message still appears, or if the machine stops mid-programme with a closed door, the switch itself or its wiring is the explanation rather than the door. That is a different situation from the one Asko is describing here, and it is a service matter.

CLASSIFICATION: normal operation and, in the great majority of cases, exactly what it says.

Common Causes of PLEASE CLOSE THE DOOR

  • Door not latched, only pushed to
  • Laundry trapped in the door opening or the seal
  • Door seal rolled or standing proud of its channel
  • Lint packed into the catch or the striker
  • Machine not level, so the door drifts back before the catch engages
  • Door switch or its wiring faulty, if the door is genuinely latched

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Open the door fully and close it again firmly enough to hear or feel the catch engage, rather than pushing it to. Before you do, look around the opening for anything trapped - a sleeve, a corner of a duvet cover, a sock caught in the seal - since one trapped item is the most common reason a door will not latch. Check the seal is sitting in its channel all the way round rather than rolled or standing proud, and look at the catch and the striker for lint packed into them, which is easy to clear with a dry cloth while the machine is cool. Check too that the machine is level and not rocking, because a dryer slightly off level lets the door drift back before the catch takes. Then press start again. If the door latches firmly and the message still appears, or if the dryer stops part way through a programme with the door properly shut, stop restarting it and have it looked at: the switch or its wiring is in the door frame next to the cabinet wiring, and getting to it means taking the front panel off a machine that must be unplugged or switched off at the breaker first.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None for closing the door properly, clearing trapped laundry or wiping lint from a cool catch - all of that is ordinary use.
  • The door switch and its wiring sit in the frame alongside the cabinet wiring, so if the switch is the problem the machine has to be unplugged or switched off at the breaker and the front panel removed, which is service work.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

PLEASE CLOSE THE DOOR FAQ

Because the control is not reading the door, it is reading a switch. A door resting against the frame without the catch engaging, a trapped sleeve or a proud seal all leave that switch reporting open. If the catch clicks firmly and the message persists, the switch is the next thing to look at.

That points away from the door itself. A latched door that momentarily reports open during a programme usually means the switch or its wiring, and it is worth having checked rather than restarting repeatedly.
