What MAXIMUM PROGRAM TIME Means
WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: some Asko dryers have a text window instead of a numeric display, and on those the faults arrive as words rather than as codes. Two Asko documents cover this message. The Use and Care Guide for the T711, T721, T731, T761 and T781 prints "Maximum program time" in its section for the T761 and T781, introduced with "Error messages will display in the LCD window if a fault occurs while a program is in progress." The TD70 service manual prints "Max Program Time" for the TD70.2 and TD70.3 machines.
WHAT THE MESSAGE MEANS: the dryer has run for as long as its programme is allowed to run without the load reaching the dryness that was asked for, so it has stopped. The TD70 service manual states the limit for its platform exactly: "The program cycle time exceeds 200 minutes. The cycle is stopped and the program is reset." On the US T761 and T781 the equivalent limit is three hours. Nothing has been tested and failed. The machine has run out of time.
THE SOLUTIONS ASKO PRINTS FOR THE T761 AND T781, QUOTED: "Clean the lint filter." / "Make sure both fuses are intact." / "Make sure exhaust hose is clear (T761)." The middle one is easy to skim past and it is the most interesting. On a US machine running from a 240-volt supply, losing one supply leg leaves the drum turning and the heating gone, and the result is a cycle that runs to its limit with a damp load at the end.
THE CAUSES THE TD70 SERVICE MANUAL ADDS: "High ambient temperature combined with low heater output and low drying temperature leads to poor condensation formation." And: "Poor condensation due to blocked external air." Its customer checks are "Tried spinning at a higher speed", "Had the machine switched off for 30 minutes before restarting" and "Good ventilation in the room".
WHY THE ROOM MATTERS ON A CONDENSING MACHINE: it takes moisture out of the air by cooling it with air from the room. A machine in a cupboard or a small sealed laundry warms its own surroundings as it runs, the cooling gets worse, less water leaves the air on each pass, and the cycle runs long.
CLASSIFICATION: normal protective behaviour, with maintenance and installation causes behind it.
Common Causes of MAXIMUM PROGRAM TIME
- Lint filter blocked or blinded by fabric softener film
- Exhaust hose crushed, sagging, blocked or closed at the outside flap on a vented machine
- Condenser or evaporator filters blocked on a condensing machine
- One supply leg lost at the breaker or the outlet, so the drum turns and the heat does not
- Load put in too wet because it was spun at a low speed, or too large for the programme
- Machine in a confined or unventilated space so the air around it is too warm to condense with
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the machine cool first, then work through the published list. Clean the lint filter properly - peel the lint off, wash the mesh under a tap to clear the fabric softener film that blocks air while looking clean, and dry it before refitting. On a vented machine, check the exhaust hose along its whole run for crushing, sagging or a lint-packed outlet, and check that the flap outside opens. On a condensing machine, empty and reseat the water container and clean the condenser or the evaporator filters as your own manual describes. Then look at the load and the room: spin the next load at the highest speed the fabric allows, since water the washer removes is water the dryer does not have to boil off, and open a door or a window if the machine lives in a confined space. On a TD70 the manual asks you to leave the machine off for thirty minutes before restarting, and that is worth doing rather than skipping, because restarting immediately puts the machine straight back into the warm air that caused the problem. If a well-spun, modest load in a ventilated room with clean filters still runs to the limit, the heating side is underperforming and that is where owner checks end. Asko's mention of fuses refers to checking that the dryer circuit is intact at the breaker panel; reset a tripped breaker once, and if it goes again leave it off and have the circuit looked at.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The filter housing, the condenser and the duct connection are hot at the end of a long cycle, so the machine is switched off and left to cool before any of them is touched.
- Checking that the dryer circuit is intact means looking at the breaker panel, not opening the machine or the outlet; a breaker that trips again after one reset is reporting a circuit fault.
- If the airflow path is clear and the room is ventilated, what remains is the heating side, which sits behind panels carrying the dryer supply and is not an owner check.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
