What E12 Means
WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: the E-series belongs to the Asko Logic, Pro Home, Craft and Elements washers - models such as W2084, W4086, W6088X and the WM75 series. On these the display shows "Error" and the number; holding the INFO button brings up the description text, and EXIT returns to the main menu. The earlier W6xxx machines do not use E-codes at all; they show F10, F11 and F12, which are separate entries here.
WHAT E12 MEANS: the description text is "MOTOR ERROR", given in some editions as "MOTOR CONTROL ERROR". Asko's published action is "Restart the program. If the error reoccurs, call a service technician."
WHAT THE TWO WORDINGS COVER BETWEEN THEM: the motor itself, and the electronics that drive it. On these machines the two are closely coupled - the control does not just switch the motor on, it regulates its speed continuously and watches what comes back - so a fault in the drive can read the same way as a fault in the motor from outside the cabinet. That is exactly why a restart is worth one attempt and a technician is worth calling after it.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE: a drum that does not turn, turns in one direction only, or stops partway through a cycle with the load still wet.
CLASSIFICATION: fault. This is not a loading problem and not something a different programme will get round.
Common Causes of E12
- Motor winding or brushes failed
- Motor control electronics faulty
- Tacho or position sensing not reporting correctly
- Drive belt slipping or broken, where one is fitted
- Drum jammed by an object between drum and outer tub
- Wiring or connector between control and motor damaged
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Restart the programme once, as the manual instructs. Before it runs, do the two checks that cost nothing and occasionally explain everything: open the door and make sure nothing has worked its way between the drum and the outer tub - a wire from a bra, a coin at the bottom of the door seal - and turn the empty drum by hand to feel whether it moves freely or catches. Note what you find. If the error returns, that is the end of the owner's side: the motor, its drive belt where fitted and the motor control board are all inside the cabinet, the machine has to be isolated at the outlet or the breaker before any panel comes off, and on these washers the drive electronics carry mains voltage and hold a charge after disconnection. Describe the symptom precisely when you call - whether the drum turned at all, in which direction, and at what point it stopped.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The motor and its drive electronics sit inside the cabinet, carry mains voltage and can hold a charge after the machine is disconnected, so this is not an isolate-and-look job.
- The drum is spring-suspended, and dismantling around it is what a motor or belt change involves rather than a simple panel removal.
