What UE Means

WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: the Asko WL6511XXLW, WL6511XXLT and WL6532 XXL. These are built on a bought-in platform rather than on the Asko WM control, and their code alphabet is entirely their own. Nothing in it maps onto the Asko F10, F11 and F12 set or onto the E0 to E37 series used by the Logic and Pro Home machines, and the same strings appear in both places meaning different things. The source is the service manual for each model, and the codes below are confirmed from the WL6511XXLW document.

HOW THESE MACHINES REPORT A FAULT: the documented pattern is uniform across the platform. All the indicator lights go out, the code blinks in the display, the buzzer sounds for ten seconds every ten minutes, and the display clears when the machine is switched off and on again. Clearing the display is not the same as clearing the problem.

WHAT UE MEANS: the service manual gives it as "Unbalance Error", raised when the main spin is not achieved within twenty balance cycles, or when the balancing spin fails part way through.

UE IS THE ONE EXCEPTION TO THE PLATFORM'S OWN CLEARING RULE: every other code on these machines clears when the power is switched off and on. UE does not. The documented way to clear it is to open the door, redistribute the laundry, close the door and press start or stop to restart the spin. That difference is a clue in itself - the machine is not asking to be reset, it is asking for the load to be sorted out.

WHAT THE MACHINE WAS DOING: before every spin the control settles the load, tumbling at low speed and measuring how evenly the weight is sitting. Twenty attempts is a lot of patience. Only after all of them fail does it report UE rather than take an unbalanced drum up to speed, which is what makes a washer hammer, walk across the floor and wear out its own bearings.

WHY THE LAUNDRY IS SOAKING: because the spin did not happen, not because the machine failed to drain. The water is in the fabric rather than in the drum.

CLASSIFICATION: normal protective behavior. Nothing has failed, no part is involved, and the machine is asking for a minute of help.

Common Causes of UE

  • Single heavy item spinning on its own
  • Load bunched on one side of the drum
  • Items roped together, often inside a duvet cover
  • Drum packed too full for the laundry to move and settle
  • Machine not level, or a foot not touching the floor
  • Very mixed load of heavy and light items

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Do what the manual says, in order: open the door, redistribute the laundry by hand into loose heaps around the drum rather than one mass on one side, close the door and press start or stop to restart the spin. That resolves most of these. If one heavy item is in there alone - a bath mat, a pair of jeans, a padded jacket, a single towel - add two or three other items so it has something to balance against, because a single heavy thing cannot distribute itself however many times the machine tries. Unwind anything that has roped up, particularly a duvet cover that has gathered the rest of the load inside it. If the load is very large, take some out and spin it in two goes; a drum packed tight cannot move the laundry around to balance it. While the door is open, push a top corner of the machine and check it does not rock, because a washer standing on a foot that is not quite touching the floor reports unbalance on loads that are perfectly well packed, and the feet adjust by hand. If a modest, evenly spread load on a machine that stands firm still will not spin, that is worth having looked at rather than repeating the attempt.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None - redistributing the load, restarting the spin and checking the machine stands firm is ordinary use and is exactly what the manual asks for.
  • If an even, modest load still will not spin, the next step is a service call rather than repeated attempts, because each one takes a drum already reported as unbalanced towards speed.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

UE FAQ

Because it is not asking to be reset. The documented way out of UE is to open the door, redistribute the washing and restart the spin, and the manual singles it out as the exception to the power-cycle rule for exactly that reason.

That is what the count means. The control tries to settle the load repeatedly before giving up, so reaching UE usually means something in the drum genuinely cannot be balanced - a single heavy item, a roped-up duvet cover, or a load packed too tightly to move.
