What OE Means

WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: the Asko WL6511XXLW, WL6511XXLT and WL6532 XXL. These are built on a bought-in platform rather than on the Asko WM control, and their code alphabet is entirely their own. Nothing in it maps onto the Asko F10, F11 and F12 set or onto the E0 to E37 series used by the Logic and Pro Home machines, and the same strings appear in both places meaning different things. The source is the service manual for each model, and the codes below are confirmed from the WL6511XXLW document.

HOW THESE MACHINES REPORT A FAULT: the documented pattern is uniform across the platform. All the indicator lights go out, the code blinks in the display, the buzzer sounds for ten seconds every ten minutes, and the display clears when the machine is switched off and on again. Clearing the display is not the same as clearing the problem.

WHAT OE MEANS: the service manual gives it as "Output Error - error in drainage" and defines the trigger exactly: "In case water level does not reach reset point in 10 minutes after drainage starts."

WHAT THE MACHINE WAS DOING: it started the drain pump and watched the level sensor for the level to fall back to its reset point. Ten minutes is a long time for a machine to empty, so OE is not a marginal call - it means the water is substantially not leaving.

WHY IT STOPS RATHER THAN CARRYING ON: the next thing after draining is the spin, and a drum full of water taken up to spin speed is how machines break themselves and their surroundings. The door also stays locked while there is water in there, which is correct behavior rather than a second problem.

WHERE THE PROBLEM USUALLY IS: the pump filter, the pump itself, the drain hose or the waste connection. The pump filter is a trap by design - coins, hair clips, buttons, screws and underwire all collect there - and on a machine whose filter has never been opened it eventually holds enough to slow the flow past the limit.

THE RELATED CODE ON THE SAME PLATFORM: PFE is the pump filter error, raised from the motor's behavior during spin rather than from a drainage timeout. Both point at the same filter and the same clean, so a machine showing one has often been showing the other.

CLASSIFICATION: problem, with genuine owner checks in front of it.

Common Causes of OE

  • Pump filter blocked with lint, coins, hair clips or buttons
  • Object jammed in the drain pump impeller
  • Drain hose kinked, crushed or sagging into a water-holding loop
  • Waste connection, standpipe or sink trap spigot blocked, or a blanking plug still fitted
  • Drain pump worn or failed
  • Water level sensor not reporting the falling level

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Switch the machine off at the outlet or the breaker before you open anything, because the pump is under the control of the board and can be commanded to run, and because the drum still holds water. If the machine has just run a hot wash, let it stand until the water has cooled - it is hot enough to scald coming out of the filter. Put towels down and a shallow tray under the filter cover at the bottom front, and have a second container to empty into. Release the filter slowly in stages, letting the water out at a rate you can manage rather than all at once, because there can be several liters behind it. With the filter out, clean it thoroughly, look into the pump housing with a torch and turn the impeller gently with a finger to feel whether anything is wedged against it. Then follow the drain hose along its run for a kink, a crush point where the machine has been pushed back, or a sagging loop, and check the waste connection it joins - a sink trap spigot with a blanking plug still fitted gives exactly this on a newly installed machine. Refit the filter squarely and hand-tight with its seal seated, restore power and run a drain or spin. Check underneath for weeping afterwards. If it still will not empty, it is a service call.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The pump can be energized by the control at any moment, so the machine is switched off at the outlet or the breaker before the filter cover is opened.
  • The filter is released in stages over a tray, because the drum holds several liters and opening it in one movement puts all of it on the floor.
  • After an interrupted hot wash that water is hot enough to scald, so the machine is left to stand before the filter is touched.
  • The pump body and its wiring sit in the base of the cabinet next to the mains loom, so anything beyond the filter aperture is service work.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

OE FAQ

It is, deliberately. The machine is allowing for a slow drain, a long hose run and a partly restricted waste before it decides anything is wrong, which is why OE usually means a real blockage rather than a borderline one.

The hose run and the waste connection. A kink behind the machine, a sagging loop full of water or a blocked spigot at the sink trap stops the water leaving just as effectively, and all of them are reachable without opening the machine.
