What PREPARING TO DOOR UNLOCKING Means

WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: the current Asko E-series machines - the Logic, Pro Home, Craft and Elements washers. Two Asko documents carry it, the WM75.1 instructions covering the W4086C and W4096P and the WM85.C-V instructions, which puts the message beyond doubt.

WHAT ASKO PRINTS, IN FULL: the message is "Preparing to door unlocking." Pressing the INFO button brings up the description, which reads "Draining must be performed. Wait for door unlocking." The action is "Wait that process is finished. If after this process no error is shown, new cycle can be run."

WHY THIS IS ON A PAGE ABOUT ERROR CODES AT ALL: because it appears in the same display, in the same style, at a moment when people are waiting for a door to open, and it reads exactly like a problem. It is not one. Every word of Asko's own entry is about waiting.

WHAT THE MACHINE IS ACTUALLY DOING: it will not release the door while there is water in the drum, so before it can unlock it has to pump out. That is what this message covers - the interval between the program ending, or being stopped, and the door being free. On a machine that has just been stopped mid-cycle, or that has finished a program with a rinse-hold, there can be a full drum to deal with and the wait is correspondingly longer.

WHEN THE WAIT STOPS BEING NORMAL: if the message stays for far longer than a drain should take, or never clears at all, the machine is not draining rather than simply taking its time. At that point it is the drain path that needs attention, and the machine will usually go on to show a draining error of its own.

CLASSIFICATION: normal status. Nothing has failed, and Asko's instruction is one word long.

Common Causes of PREPARING TO DOOR UNLOCKING

  • A normal drain in progress before the door can be released, which is the usual case
  • A large volume of water left in the drum because the cycle was stopped mid-program
  • Drain slowed by a partly blocked pump filter, so the wait runs long
  • Drain hose kinked or the waste connection restricted
  • Drain pump failing, in which case a draining error normally follows

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Wait, which is genuinely what the manual asks. Give the machine a few minutes with the door left alone, and do not switch it off part way through, because interrupting a drain leaves the water in the drum and puts you back at the start. When the message clears and no error follows it, the machine is ready for a new cycle, which is Asko's own closing sentence. If you want to know how it is getting on, listen: a drain pump makes a distinct high note and you can usually hear when it has run out of water to move. If the message is still there well beyond a reasonable drain, treat it as a draining problem rather than a door problem. Switch the machine off at the outlet or the breaker, put towels and a shallow tray at the bottom front, release the pump filter slowly in stages so the water comes out at a rate you can catch, clean it and the pump housing, and check the drain hose for kinks and the waste connection for a blockage; let the machine stand first if the wash was hot. Then restore power and let it try again.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None for waiting - that is the whole of the published instruction.
  • The machine is not switched off part way through the drain, because that leaves the water in the drum and the door still held.
  • If the pump filter does have to be opened, the machine is switched off at the outlet or the breaker first and the filter is released in stages over a tray, after the water has cooled if the wash was hot.

PREPARING TO DOOR UNLOCKING FAQ

Long enough to pump out whatever is in the drum, which is usually a minute or two and longer if the machine was stopped with a full tub. If it is still showing well past that, treat it as a drainage problem rather than continuing to wait.

Not while there is water in there. The lock is holding the drum contents on the right side of the glass, and any documented manual release on these machines requires the water to be out and the power off before it is used.
