What WASH MOTOR FAULT Means

WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: Asko washers with a text window rather than a numeric display report their problems in words. The Use and Care Guides for the US W6761, W640 and W660 carry one such table; the operating instructions for the W8844XL and the W6884 Eco carry another; and the WM60 service manual carries the problem-indication tables for the WM60.2 and WM60.3 panels. The wording varies between them, and the section below says which document each form comes from. All of these machines clear the message the same way, by turning the machine off and then back on.

THE TWO WORDINGS: the W6761, W640 and W660 guide and the W8844XL book print "Wash motor problem". The WM60 service manual prints "Motor problem" in its problem-indication table. Both describe the drive being interrupted.

WHAT ASKO PRINTS FOR THE OWNER: very little, and honestly so. The W6761, W640 and W660 guide gives "Call a service technician". The W8844XL book directs the owner to customer care with no explanation attached. No meaning beyond the part name is published on those models.

WHAT THE SERVICE DOCUMENTATION ADDS: the W600-series service manual reads "Wiring open-circuit or motor problem has been indicated and the washing program has been interrupted." The WM60 service manual is more specific about the mechanism: the problem is "Indicated if the tacho generator is overloaded or control signal is missing", with the service action "Check signal from the MCU and cables between motor and MCU".

WHAT A TACHO GENERATOR IS AND WHY IT MATTERS HERE: it is a small generator on the motor that produces a signal proportional to speed, and it is how the control knows what the drum is actually doing rather than what it asked for. The control does not simply switch the motor on; it regulates speed continuously against that feedback. Lose the feedback, or overload it, and the control has no way to run the motor safely, so it stops.

WHY THE MESSAGE COVERS MORE THAN A FAILED MOTOR: an open circuit in the wiring, a missing control signal from the motor control unit and a problem in the motor itself all look the same from outside the cabinet, which is why the manuals name the area rather than the part.

WHAT AN OWNER SEES: a drum that will not turn, turns in one direction only, or a cycle that stops partway with the load still wet.

CLASSIFICATION: problem. No loading change and no other program works around it.

Common Causes of WASH MOTOR FAULT

  • Tacho generator overloaded or its signal missing, which the WM60 manual names directly
  • Open circuit in the wiring between the motor and the motor control unit
  • Motor control unit not producing the control signal
  • Motor winding, or brushes where fitted, failed
  • Object wedged between the drum and the outer tub, stalling the drive
  • Drive belt slipping or broken, where one is fitted

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

There is no published owner procedure, but two observations cost nothing and both narrow the field. With the machine switched off at the outlet or the breaker and the drum empty and completely at rest, turn the drum by hand through a full revolution and feel whether it moves freely or catches. A drum that binds points somewhere mechanical; a drum that spins freely leaves the motor, its control and the feedback between them. Then look around the inside of the door seal and the bottom of the drum opening for an object that has worked its way through - a wire from a bra, a coin, a screw - since something wedged between the drum and the outer tub stalls the drive as effectively as an electrical problem. Write down exactly what the machine does when a program is started: whether the drum moves at all, in which direction, at what point it stops, and whether the sound changes before it does. That description is what makes the visit efficient. Do not open the cabinet. The motor control electronics carry mains voltage and can hold a charge after the machine is unplugged, and the motor itself sits under a spring-suspended drum.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The motor control electronics carry mains voltage and can hold a charge after the machine is disconnected, so the cabinet is not opened for a look.
  • The motor sits beneath a spring-suspended drum, and reaching it is a strip-down rather than a panel removal.
  • The drum is only turned by hand with the machine switched off at the outlet or the breaker and completely at rest.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

WASH MOTOR FAULT FAQ

Not necessarily, but it is worth knowing. It rules out a seized drum or a jamming object, which leaves the motor, its control unit and the speed feedback, and that is where a technician will start.

A small generator fitted to the motor that produces a signal proportional to how fast it is turning. It is how the control knows the drum's real speed rather than the speed it asked for, and the WM60 manual names it as the thing that is either overloaded or silent when this message appears.
