What WATER OUTLET FAULT Means

WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: Asko washers with a text window rather than a numeric display report their problems in words, and several generations do it. The Use and Care Guides for the US W6761, W640 and W660 carry one such table; the operating instructions for the W8844XL and the W6884 Eco carry another; and the WM60 service manual carries the problem-indication tables for the WM60.2 and WM60.3 panels. The wording varies slightly between them and the section below says which document each form comes from. All of these machines introduce the table the same way: a message appears on the display if an error occurs during the program, and it is cleared by turning the machine off and then back on.

THE THREE WORDINGS, AND WHY THEY ARE ON ONE PAGE: the W6761, W640 and W660 guide prints "Water outlet problem". The WM60 service manual prints "Water outlet problem" for the WM60.3 panel and the shorter "Outlet problem" for the WM60.2 panel. The W6884 Eco and W8844XL books print "Drainage error" and "Water outlet problem" for the same condition. Different strings, one situation: the water is not leaving the machine.

WHAT THE MACHINE WAS DOING: it ran the drain pump, watched the level, and did not get it down within the time it allows. Rather than take a drum full of water up to spin speed, it stopped. The door stays locked while that water is in there, which is correct behavior rather than a second problem - a door releasing at that moment would empty the drum onto the floor.

A DISTINCTION THE WM60 MANUAL MAKES THAT MOST DO NOT: it lists two opposite conditions under the same heading. "The drain pump has been activated more than 3 minutes. There is still water in the machine", and "The drain pump is on, without any water in the machine". The first is the familiar blockage. The second is the machine running its pump against nothing, which points at the level sensing rather than at the drain path, and it is a genuinely useful thing for a technician to be told.

WHAT ASKO PRINTS FOR THE OWNER: the W6761, W640 and W660 guide is short - "Check the pin trap for possible blockage. Make sure the outlet hose isn't kinked." The W8844XL book gives the full list: "Check: that no objects are stuck in the drainage hose outlet; that the drain pump is not blocked by foreign objects - clean the pump; that there are no kinks in the drainage hose. After the above, run Drain to empty the machine." The W6884 Eco adds the alternative of pressing the door opening button to empty the machine.

WHERE THE OBJECTS COME FROM: the pump filter is a trap by design. Coins, hair clips, buttons, screws and underwire all end up there, and on a machine that has never had the filter opened they accumulate until the flow is too slow to meet the time limit.

CLASSIFICATION: problem, and one Asko writes out for the owner to work through before anyone is called.

Common Causes of WATER OUTLET FAULT

  • Pump filter blocked with lint, coins, hair clips or buttons
  • Object jammed in the drain pump impeller
  • Drain hose kinked, crushed or sagging into a water-holding loop
  • Waste connection, standpipe or sink trap spigot blocked, or a blanking plug still fitted
  • Drain pump worn or failed
  • Level sensing reporting water that is not there, so the pump runs against an empty tub

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Switch the machine off at the outlet or the breaker before you open anything, because the pump is under the control of the board and can be commanded to run, and because the drum still holds water. If the machine has just been running a hot wash, let it stand until the water has cooled - it is hot enough to scald coming out of the filter. Put towels down and a shallow tray under the filter cover at the bottom front, and have a second container ready. Release the filter slowly, in stages, letting the water out at a rate you can manage rather than all at once; there can be several liters behind it and it comes faster than people expect. With the filter out, clean it thoroughly, look into the pump housing with a torch, and turn the impeller gently with a finger to feel whether anything is wedged against it. Then follow the drain hose along its whole run for a kink, a crush point where the machine has been pushed back, or a sagging loop holding water, and check the waste connection it joins - a sink trap spigot with its blanking plug still fitted gives exactly this problem on a newly installed machine. Refit the filter properly and hand-tight, make sure its seal is seated, restore power and run the drain program. Check under the machine for weeping afterwards. If it still will not empty, that is the point at which it becomes a service call.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The pump can be energized by the control at any moment, so the machine is switched off at the outlet or the breaker before the filter cover is opened.
  • The filter is released in stages over a tray because the drum is holding several liters and opening it in one movement puts all of it on the floor.
  • After an interrupted hot wash that water is hot enough to scald, so the machine is left to stand before the filter is touched.
  • The drain pump body and its wiring sit in the base of the cabinet next to the mains loom, so anything beyond the filter aperture is service work.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

WATER OUTLET FAULT FAQ

The hose run and the waste connection, in that order. A kink behind the machine, a sagging loop or a blocked spigot at the sink trap stops the water leaving just as effectively, and all of them are reachable without opening the machine.

That is worth reporting exactly as you describe it, because the WM60 service manual treats a pump running with no water in the machine as a separate condition from a blockage. It points at the level sensing rather than at the drain path.
