What F54 Means
WHICH MACHINES THIS APPLIES TO: F54 is published for the current Asko dishwashers - DBI, DFI, DSD and the DW60-series machines. It is not in the DW20, DW70 or DW90 fault tables.
CURRENT PLATFORM - WHAT F54 MEANS: the user manual names it "Overfilling water 2" and, unusually, explains the mechanism in the body of the manual as well: "The overflow guard starts pumping out the machine and turns off the water supply if the water level in the dishwasher exceeds the normal level. If the overflow guard is triggered, F54 (Overfilling water) appears on the display." So this code is not a warning that something might happen. It is the record of a protective system that has already acted.
WHAT THE MACHINE HAS ALREADY DONE: pumped the water out and shut its own supply off. That is why there is often nothing dramatic to see when you open the door - the guard did its job before the water reached the floor.
ASKO'S INSTRUCTION, IN ITS OWN ORDER: turn off the water supply valve and contact service, and - this is the part people get wrong - "To avoid water leakage outside the dishwasher, do not remove the plug from the power outlet until the water supply valve has been turned off." The sequence is deliberate. The machine needs power to keep running its drain pump; cutting the power while the water is still connected removes the only thing holding the situation.
CLASSIFICATION: fault, with an active water risk. This is the one Asko code on the platform where the order of two simple actions genuinely matters.
Common Causes of F54
- Water leaking into the base tray and triggering the overflow guard
- Inlet valve passing water when it should be shut
- Drain path blocked so the level could not be brought down in time
- Level sensing reporting a level that is not really there
- Door seal or a hose fitting inside the machine leaking
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Turn off the dishwasher's water supply valve first. Leave the machine plugged in while you do it - Asko is explicit that the plug must not come out until the supply valve is off, because the machine uses its drain pump to keep the level down and cutting the power stops that. Once the water is off, you can isolate the appliance at the outlet or the breaker if you want it dead, and then look: check the cabinet floor in front of and under the machine, the underside of the worktop and the adjoining units for damp, because the overflow guard triggers on water arriving where it should not be. Do not tilt the machine, do not pull it out and do not run another programme to see whether it clears. Asko's published instruction for F54 is to shut the water and call for service, and the cause is behind the base panel where the float, the base tray and the pumps are.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The machine needs its power to keep pumping, which is why Asko's instruction puts the water supply valve before the plug rather than the other way round.
- The float, the base tray and the pumps are behind the base panel of a built-in appliance and cannot be reached without unfastening it and drawing it out with the plumbing attached.
- Tilting a dishwasher to empty it moves collected water across motors and wiring that had stayed dry.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
